BMI calculator for men
BMI (body mass index) is a quick screening tool that compares your weight to your height. Enter your numbers to see where you land on Health Canada’s adult BMI categories. For adults 18 and older.
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not measure body fat directly and may not reflect health for people with high muscle mass, older adults, some ethnic backgrounds, or those with certain health conditions. For adults 18 and older. Your height and weight stay in your browser and are not saved or sent anywhere.
What BMI tells you, and what it doesn’t
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres, squared. Health Canada uses it to sort adults into weight categories linked with different levels of health risk. It is easy to calculate, which is why doctors and nurses often use it as a first check.
It does not measure body fat directly, and it does not know your age, how much muscle you carry, where you store fat, or your family history. Use it as a starting point for a conversation, not a verdict.
How to calculate BMI
BMI formula in kilograms and metres
Metric: weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres × height in metres). For example, a man who weighs 85 kg and is 1.78 m tall has a BMI of about 26.8.
BMI formula in pounds and inches
Imperial: weight in pounds × 703 ÷ (height in inches × height in inches). For example, a man who weighs 187 lb and is 70 inches tall has a BMI of about 26.8.

Health risk describes the average risk for a group of people at that BMI. It is not a prediction for any one person.
Is BMI accurate for men?
BMI works well for spotting patterns across large groups, but it has limits for individuals. Men tend to carry more muscle than women, and muscle weighs more than fat. A man who lifts regularly can land in the overweight range with a low body fat percentage. The reverse also happens: someone with a healthy BMI can carry more fat around the middle than is good for them.
BMI also reads differently across ethnic backgrounds and ages. Health risks can show up at a lower BMI for some groups, and older adults often lose muscle, which can hide extra body fat.

Waist size and other numbers that add context
Where you carry weight matters. Health Canada guidance links a waist circumference of 102 cm (40 inches) or more in men with higher health risk. A healthcare provider can measure it for you.
When should you talk to a healthcare provider about your BMI?
Blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and family history also add context that BMI cannot.
Everyday habits that support a healthy weight
Small, steady habits tend to matter more than short bursts of effort.
Move most days. The Canadian 24 Hour Movement Guidelines for adults 18 to 64 suggest at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each week, plus muscle strengthening at least two days a week.
Protect your sleep. The same guidelines suggest 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night for adults 18 to 64.
Eat with a plan. Canada’s Food Guide encourages plenty of vegetables and fruits, whole grain foods and protein foods, with water as your drink of choice.
When should you talk to a healthcare provider about your BMI?
Consider booking a visit if your BMI is outside the healthy range, your weight has changed without explanation, or you have concerns about energy, sleep, mood or other symptoms. A provider can look at the full picture and help you decide what to do next.
BMI calculator FAQs
For adults 18 and older, Health Canada's healthy weight range is a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9. This is the same range used for women. What differs between people is body composition, which BMI cannot see.
The math is exact, but BMI itself is a rough screen. It does not measure body fat, muscle or where you carry weight, so treat the result as a starting point.
Either one. Use the switch at the top of the calculator to choose feet, inches and pounds, or centimetres and kilograms. The BMI result is the same.
No. The calculator runs in your browser and does not save or send your numbers.
No. Adult BMI categories do not apply to children and teens, who are assessed with growth charts. Speak with a healthcare provider.
